NotesThe Novel Jazz Septet will be in performance at the live music venue, Cadenza, in Freeport, ME on 10 July at 7PM. The Septet is celebrating 22 years of keeping the music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn “alive and swinging.” Between them, Duke and Strays wrote several thousand compositions over their musical careers, two percent of which represent the well-known standards and 98% of which represent rarely heard gems. The Septet will perform standard tunes from the Ellington/Strayhorn repertoire plus newly-arranged compositions that they have unearthed from original recordings, as well as manuscripts from the Ellington Archives of the Smithsonian Museum of American History and the Strayhorn Collection at the Library of Congress, both in Washington D.C. Novel Jazz members have dusted these pieces off, rearranged them for the septet, and given them a 21st century sound, all of their own. Tickets are general admission and advanced discounted at $15 (+ ticket fee) for students, $30 (+ ticket fee) for all others or $35 at the door.
For more information, call the Cadenza box office at 207-560-5300 or navigate your browser to https://www.cadenzafreeport.com/. To find out more about the band, navigate your browser to https://www.mainejazz.net/. Cadenza is located at 5 Depot Street, Freeport, ME 04032. Remember, “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing! So, swing-on over to Cadenza on 10 July for some classic jazz by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn!

NotesA special afternoon with the iconic jazz clarinetist, Brad Terry and the extraordinary jazz guitarist, Peter Herman.
Brad Terry is a jazz legend and Maine treasure. Brad's musical journey started more than 70 years ago when legendary band leader "King of Swing" Benny Goodman told his mother to buy Brad a clarinet. "I got three free lessons when I bought the instrument and almost immediately, I started playing this wonderful music called jazz. Undiagnosed ADD forced me to learn everything by ear; reading music was not an option. (Later I had three unproductive lessons with Benny )"
It was raw luck that early on Brad started playing with Steve Swallow, Sam Brown & Wayne Wright; did concerts with Chuck Wayne & Joe Puma; sat in at the Celebrity Club and played multiple gigs with Buddy Tate & Buck Clayton.
Later Brad sat in with Eddie Thompson and Major Holly and played for years with Eddie Thompson, even recording a CD with him.
Brad won the Hennessy Cognac Jazz search in NYC with John Basile and recorded a whistling track with Roger Kellaway and Red Mitchell.
Dizzy Gillespie visited for a week doing school programs and invited Brad to New York to play Cuban music with him at The Village Gate.
Brad enjoyed a 25 year partnership with Joachim Mencel in Poland including lots of concerts and school programs and recording 3 CDs. (23 trips to Poland)
While in Poland Brad recorded 2 CDs, 1 Gershwin and 1 Ellington, with Jarek Smietana.
Brad's album with guitar legend and Maine native Lenny Breau, “Livingroom Tapes”, received 4 stars from Leonard Feather.
