Jul 29 @ 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
VenueHarpswell Bandstand by the Sea
AddressHarpswell, ME
NotesThe Novel Jazz Septet will be in concert at the Harpswell Bandstand by the Sea on Thursday, 29 July, 2021, 6:00-7:30PM featuring music of the iconic Duke Ellington and his equally iconic musical collaborator, Billy Strayhorn. Novel Jazz is a Maine-based group, now in their 17th year of concerts around Maine and New England. Their mission is to share the music and stories of these two giants of jazz who wrote some 3000 compositions over their musical careers, two percent of which represents the well-known standards and 98% of which most have never heard. They’ll perform standard tunes from the Ellington/Strayhorn repertoire plus newly arranged compositions that they have unearthed in the Ellington Archives of the Smithsonian Museum of American History as well as the new Strayhorn Collection at the Library of Congress, Washington D.C. Novel Jazz members have rearranged these pieces for the septet, dusted them off and given them a 21st century sound, all of their own. Aimsel Ponti of the Portland Press Herald described Novel Jazz, “These are all seasoned jazz guys, and the result is a sound that made me sway, smile, groove, slow-dance with myself around the living room and play the air snare drums!” Admission is free. There are no rain dates this year. If there is any question about the weather, call the Town Office at 207-833-5771 or check the Town website in case of rain, The Harpswell Bandstand by the sea is located at George Mitchell Field on Route 123 in Harpswell, the Bandstand is a serene location to hear superlative musicians from near and far. You are invited to bring your friends and family, perhaps a picnic, and blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy the summer evenings with a variety of music for all ages. The Bandstand has not only become a visual symbol for the town of Harpswell, but also a venue for town events, as well as a place for families to enjoy a warm summer’s day.
