NotesThe Novel Jazz Septet swings back to the Opera House of Boothbay Harbor!
The Novel Jazz Septet will be in concert at the Opera House of Boothbay Harbor on Friday, 5 August, 2022, 7:30PM featuring music of the iconic Duke Ellington and his equally iconic musical collaborator, Billy Strayhorn. Novel Jazz is a Maine-based group, now in their 18th year of concerts around Maine and New England. Their mission is to share the music and stories of these two giants of jazz who wrote some 3000 compositions over their musical careers, two percent of which represents the well-known standards and 98% of which represents rarely heard gems. They’ll perform standard tunes from the Ellington/Strayhorn repertoire plus newly arranged compositions that they have unearthed from the Ellington Archives of the Smithsonian Museum of American History as well as the Strayhorn Collection at the Library of Congress, Washington D.C. Novel Jazz members have dusted these pieces off, rearranged them for the septet, and given them a 21st century sound, all of their own. Tickets are advanced discounted at $20 or $25 day of show. For more information, call the box office at 207-633-5159 or navigate your browser to https://boothbayoperahouse.com/event/novel-jazz-septet/ .
The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor is located at 86 Townsend Harbor, Boothbay Harbor, ME. Swing-on over to the Opera House of Boothbay Harbor on the 5th of August for some ‘jazz on a summer’s day’ with Duke, Billy Strayhorn and the Novel Jazz Septet!

NotesDiscover Downtown Westbrook is pleased to announce the addition of The Macisso Family Music Festival. This will be an addition to the very popular Vallee Square Concert Series.
Keep reading to learn more about the Macisso family and this great event!
Who is the Macisso Family?
The Macisso family is arguably one of Westbrook’s most extraordinary and significant musical families. Marc, Tommy, and Jimmy have all made tremendous contributions to the world of music.
Each has been a solid foundation in branding Westbrook as Maine’s music city. The Macisso Family Music Festival will showcase the rich history of musicians from Westbrook and its influence on our town.
Rudy Vallee, Don Doane, Billie Gouzie, Peter Albert, Al Hawks, Steve Noyes, Bess Jacques, the Macisso brothers, and many more talented players have put Westbrook on the map for having the best musicians. Having this incredible foundation will only continue to pave the way for more talented musicians coming out of Westbrook for years to come!
What is the Macisso Family Music Festival?
This event is scheduled for Saturday, August 6th! Make sure to mark your calendars for this can’t miss event! The Macisso Family Music Festival will showcase many Westbrook musicians.
In addition to hearing fantastic local musicians, you’ll also have the opportunity to see several influential people recognized with official awards. There will even be an open jam available to musicians in the area who want to contribute and make music!
As always, Discover Downtown Westbrook is working hard to make our vision of “embracing the downtown” a reality. One great way to do this is by making music the star! Our goal with the Macisso Family Music Festival is to celebrate the historical music legacy of our city.
Celebrating Our Historical Greats!
One of the most well-known stars from Westbrook is none other than Rudy Vallee. After all, if you know of Rudy Vallee Square, you may already know about his incredible legacy and star power.
About Rudy Vallee
The family moved to Westbrook, Maine, outside Portland, during Rudy’s childhood. He took immediately to a snare drum his family gave him when he was 11 years old.
After learning the snare drum, he soon taught himself piano and clarinet in between school, worked at the family pharmacy, and performed drum duties in his high school band. Back in Maine in 1925, Vallee landed a job in the resort town of Old Orchard Beach that involved singing and playing saxophone.
Frustrated by the problem of being heard in the large dance halls in which he appeared, Vallee unscrewed the bell from his baritone saxophone and used it as a megaphone when he sang.
About Al Hawkes
Another incredible Westbrook native is Al Hawkes. His contributions to country and bluegrass are extraordinary!
Al Hawkes, a bluegrass and country music pioneer from Westbrook, once advised Chet Atkins on making better recordings and helped integrate bluegrass music. He was considered country music royalty, a singer and songwriter with a good voice and a friendly personality who could also play the guitar and mandolin.
The International Bluegrass Museum in Kentucky recognized Hawkes for his pioneering work. He is a member of the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame and America’s Old-Time Country Music Hall of Fame.
Discover Downtown Westbrook is proud to bring the Macisso Family Music Festival to Westbrook this summer. If you are a Westbrook musician and would like to play, please reach out to James Tranchemontagne at james@thefrogandturtle.com
We hope to see you all there during this fantastic event, either playing music or listening along with our talented musicians!

NotesThis Saturday: Mes Amis returns to Searsmont!
They wrote the Searsmont Strut (listen to it from the sidebar of our webpage) when they played a concert IN the library in the winter of 2020 - and they are coming back with their full quartet to play out on the lawn!
Mes Amis is a Gypsy Jazz small group led by guitarist, vocalist and composer Steve Lynnworth. The band plays an infectious mix of traditional Gypsy, Latin and American jazz standards along with many of Steve’s original compositions.
Appealing to listeners young and old alike, the insistent rhythms, bouncing bass lines and sweetly intricate melodies are easy on the ears for those unfamiliar with jazz, and yet can stand the scrutiny of an aficionado. As it was so aptly put by Rich Tozier, host of MPBN Radio’s Jazz Tonight, “Who couldn’t like that?”
The core of the band is a trio, with Steve handling the vocals and much of the lead work. Backing him up are his friends Harry Richter on guitar and Wells Gordon on the upright bass. Harry provides "La Pompe," the steady backbeat typical of the style, while Wells delivers an authoritative thump as he holds down the bottom. Both Harry and Wells are capable soloists as well - and Wells is awful quick with his bow when necessary! For this date they are joined by Shane Ellis, a master clarinet and sax player. Steve and Shane have a fantastic time playing together and pushing each other to new heights. For more info about the band: Mes Amis
The concert is presented free to the public. Bring a camp chair or a blanket, and a picnic if you like. Concert will be moved into the Community Hall in event of inclement weather (in which case, bring a mask and not a chair).
This concert is funded in part through the generous funding of the Friends of Searsmont Library and fundraising by the Library's Board of Trustees.

NotesCome hear these local blues masters exhibit their devotion to this cornerstone of American Music.
The Blues Prophets began as “The New England Blues Prophets” rehearsing in the basement of a house in Norridgewock, ME back in 1976. Even as teenagers, the Blues Prophets became lifelong disciples of the music, playing in the funkier clubs in the area like the Chez Paree, Emma's Hotel Lounge and the Manoir Hotel under an assortment of band names, gleaning skills from the older musicians who were already established in the club circuit. Live music was everywhere in those years and to the band’s surprise; patrons embraced the idea and sound of a band that played the blues and nothing else. The Prophets were many local Maine music patrons’ first introduction to the blues.
The Blues Prophets traveled to the four corners of Chicago, many stages in New Orleans, Boston and throughout Maine/New England honing their craft. During those travels the band met and performed with scores of the living blues heroes of the day like Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, James Cotton, Professor Longhair, KoKo Taylor, Jimmy Johnson , Otis Rush, and many more. During the 70's and 80's, the band became an institution on the club scene in Maine and inspired other musicians to turn their attention to the blues, working the gritty Chicago style and other derivative sounds into their own bands. Certain clubs in Maine were even denoted as “blues clubs” since they hired not only local blues acts, but national touring blues acts. Many blues veterans on the road were delighted to learn that clubs like the Cellar Door in Auburn, Benjamin’s in Bangor and an out of the way place in Monroe called The Red Barn were great stopovers, complete with blues thirsty crowds, allowing them to make a little more money on the way to their next destination point in the tour. Songwriter Larry John McNally wrote an article about the Blues Prophets for a local music publication in the mid 1970's; "This is good time music for dancing and having fun, not crying in your beer. Quint Davis, famed promoter for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival was quoted as saying in advance of the 1979 Festival, "A great young blues band from, Maine? I have to have them at the festival". Doug Wainoris, guitar/vocals. DW Gill, harmonica/vocals. Jeffrey Davison, drums/vocals. Jamie Isaacson, piano. Jack Tukey, bass guitar.
