NotesA dynamic band spanning styles from roots to contemporary blues, this driving 4-piece band is sure to scratch your blues itch. The band is fronted by the combo of musical power houses guitarist and vocalist Dave 'Fish' Bottom, and Chris Velletri on tenor sax and vocals. This powerful duo is backed by one of the tightest rhythm sections around consisting of Steve Kaulback on drums and vocals and bassist Marty Lynch. Dave Bottom – Guitar and Vocals Dave picked up his first guitar from a dime store and started teaching himself to play. After flirting with pop music Dave was introduced to blues via the famed British Invasion. That influence underlies the bluesy soloing that Dave brings to his playing; feisty blues steeped in traditional idioms with modern aggression. Dave has performed with LA East, St Amand, Blue Sky Project, Blues Tonight, Maxwell Street and the Voodoo Clowns. Dave is a member of the Maine Blues Hall of Fame. Marty Lynch – Bass and Vocals Marty has been playing bass since the late 80's when he was in an original Americana band, currently called Comanchero, out of Boston. In 2003 he moved to Maine and began playing with Bonnie Edwards and the Practical Cats. He continues to frequent blues jams in the area and current plays with the Blues Mafia, Bluzology, the Voodoo Clowns., Matt and the Barnburners, Luther James and the River Kings and Bonnie Edwards. He plays a combination of upright electric and regular electric bass. Marty is a member of the Maine Blues Hall of Fame. Chris Velletri – Sax and Vocals A New York native, Chris started playing the sax in the third grade. His earliest musical influences include: Benny Carter, Illinois Jacquet, Thelonious Monk, Art Pepper, and Zoot Sims. After college, he relegated his horn to the back of his closet. After a thirty-five-year layoff, Chris got sax out in 2017, and hasn’t looked back. Bitten hard by the blues bug, he bought himself a tenor saxophone and joined the Voodoo Clowns. Steve Kaulback – Drums and Vocals The son of a Navy Commander, Steve started his musical journey in Texas in 1963 singing and drumming. After hearing Albert King’ Live Wire/Blues Power album he knew he was hooked for life. His bands have included: Cottonmouth Blues Band, Arlo West and the LA Bluesmen, The Pinecasters, Juke Joint Devils, Continental Shakedown, Mike Hayward and the Blue Lions, Dave Mello Trio, and the Voodoo Clowns. Steve is a member of the Maine Blues Hall of Fame and is recognized by the Maine Blues Heritage Foundation Museum. NotesBATH — Popular Portland-based duo Muddy Ruckus will play on Saturday, Feb. 1, at The Chocolate Church Arts Center. The band will bring its stripped-down rootsy guitar and edgy percussion to the arts center’s intimate annex space, adjacent to the main theater. Muddy Ruckus, comprised of guitarist Ryan Flaherty and drummer Erika Stahl, play what they describe as a “grungy style of railroad indie punk blues.” The genre-bending band has been described by New York Music Daily as “darkly inventive Americana” and Motif Magazine advises that the group is “Real and raw, don’t miss them in the flesh.” The band recently put out a music video for a new single, “Footsteps,” which has racked up over 22,000 views on YouTube and showcases Muddy Ruckus’ unique, high-energy sound. In the midst of the video release, drummer Erika Stahl underwent emergency dialysis and is currently waiting on a kidney transplant. A fundraiser has been launched on Facebook, and attendees at the show on Feb. 1 will be invited to donate to help cover Stahl’s medical expenses. Other upcoming winter events at the Chocolate Church Arts Center include performances by improv comedy group The Doppelbloopers on Jan. 31, Bill Staines (popular folk songwriter) on Feb. 7, a Tropical Valentine’s Day fundraiser party on Feb. 14, and a comedy show with Johnny Ater and friends on Feb. 15. Tickets for Muddy Ruckus in the annex at the Chocolate Church Arts Center are $15 advance or $18 at the door. Tickets for this show, and all events at the Chocolate Church Arts Center, can be purchased at www.chocolatechurcharts.org or by calling 207-442-8455.

Notes"Bad Friday" Dance party! El Malo is a musical collective specializing in the sounds of Latin dance music blended with jazz, hiphop, funk, soul, and progressive rock influences. With fresh sounding tributes to classic Latin artists and energetic original material courtesy of a lineup featuring drum kit/Latin percussion, electric guitar, bass, vocals and horns, we bring the party to any event. On El Malo's first (self titled) release, a low-fi Latin Jazz session recorded live in Brunswick, Maine; the Portland Phoenix published a complementary review, calling the release, in part: "gritty and nasty in some interesting ways" and "As a whole, this album is a piece of genuinely different music-making with Latin and gypsy flavors you won't find often in Portland."

Sandy River Ramblers @ Mt. Vernon Community Center
Feb 15 @ 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
VenueMt. Vernon Community Center
Address2 Main St., Mt. Vernon ME
NotesThe Sandy River Ramblers will showcase their Maine-flavored bluegrass songs in concert at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Mt. Vernon Community Center. This will be part of a February Frolix program — an effort to entertain Mt. Vernon residents (and others), especially seniors who might be unable to travel far for entertainment in the winter. The Ramblers, who have played many times in Mt. Vernon over the past 10 years, have released two CD in recent years; both consist of original songs with Maine themes, including such titles as “Slow Down (You’ll Hit a Moose),” “Boots from L. L. Bean,” “Cry of the Loon,” “The North Pond Hermit,” and “Bear in the Barn.” Some are funny, some are serious, and all feature outstanding singing and exciting virtuoso picking. Guitarist Stan Keach, a nationally-known bluegrass songwriter and a member of the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame writes most of the songs. Bassist Julie Davenport and Dana Reynolds contribute stunning vocals. Banjoist Bud Godsoe and fiddler Finn Woodruff are excellent instrumentalists. Admission is free; donations will be accepted. Snacks will be available at intermission. The Mt. Vernon Community Center is at 2 Main St. For more information, call 207-397-2241.

NotesHailing from the Sprague “Delta”, on the Southside of Portland, local bluesman “Fat Knuckle Freddy” opens the show with his slide guitar songs and compositions in the style of American primitive, avante-garde, and psycho-billy punk blues. FEB 28 8:00 PM ERIN HARPE & THE DELTA SWINGERS W/ FAT KNUCKLE FREDDY Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers were just named New England's best blues band, winning “Blues Artist Of The Year” at the 2019 New England Music Awards! Singer/guitarist Erin Harpe leads the roots-rocking electric band on vocals and lead guitar, playing a mix of styles they call “Boogie, Blues & Beyond”. A rising star in the roots and blues scene with a growing fan base around the world, she’s been called “one of the most dynamic, talented and exciting roots rocking blues women on the scene” by Living Blues Magazine, and has been compared to legendary blues women like Bonnie Raitt and Rory Block. The Midwest Record even called her “Bonnie Raitt on modern performance enhancing drugs!” The “modern blues mama for our times” has had an exciting year, from winning awards, to competing solo at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis (where she made it to the Semi-Finals!), to touring around the US – with stops at the Rhythm & Roots Festival (RI), Tall City Blues Fest (TX), Musikfest (PA) and Paw Paw Fest (OH), as well as in the UK! This holiday season Erin and the band celebrate with a limited-edition vinyl release of their album “The Christmas Swing” and a string of holiday parties. “The Christmas Swing” is Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers' self-produced, critically-acclaimed (anti-) Christmas album. This season on VizzTone/Juicy Juju Records, the album will be released on limited edition vinyl! The album, which has been called “sassy” and “un-traditional”, made it to #2 last season (Eric Clapton was #5!) on the Roots Music Report’s Top 50 Holiday Album Charts, AND #17 on the Living Blues Charts last December! Featuring ten songs – including a couple of Erin’s originals and her own arrangements of traditionals and songs by Chuck Berry, Bessie Smith, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Leadbelly, and more – the album is a great alternative seasonal romp, chock full of hooky blues-guitar-fueled gems that you’ll want to listen to each year as the holidays approach – in fact Steve Jones of Blues Blast Magazine says, “I will be giving it many more spins this holiday season and beyond.”

NotesBased out of Portland, Maine, Kenya Hall has shared stages with incredible local and national acts such as The Roots, Dr. John, Lettuce, Jaw Gems, Rustic Overtones, Adam Deitch, Jon Fishman, Nigel Hall, Shemekia Copeland, and Fred Wesley. As one-of-a-kind as it gets, Kenya’s musical artistry weaves together indomitable vocals with a fierce blend of soul and funk delivered with a rare energy that leaves every audience she sings to better for having been a part of it. Drawing her writing and performing influences from Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, and Sharon Jones, Kenya is not only relevant in what she says, but poignant in how she communicates it. Leaning heavily on Soul, Hip Hop, Funk, and the seed of what makes a rock and roll artist — Kenya is here to deeply inspire and elevate the world around her.

Address5 Depot Street, Freeport, ME 04032
NotesFrank Fotusky plays Acoustic Blues in the style reminiscent of the great East Coast "Piedmont" players such as Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Boy Fuller, John Jackson, Blind Willie McTell to name a few. A majority of his material is culled from the '20's, '30's and '40's and Acoustic Blues and Guitar Rags are the foundation of his music. Along with this repertoire, his original compositions are rooted in this era and still carry a contemporary feel. East coast or "Piedmont Blues," as it is so often called, consists of sophisticated syncopation with fingerpicked guitar. The result is a sound that resembles that of the ragtime piano. Frank has performed with Virginia Bluesman John Jackson, Paul Geremia, Roy Book Binder, Hubert Sumlin and has been festival headliner in his own right. BLUES ACCESS has said, "(Frank) offers a sparkling guitar sound on fine Piedmont-style blues and rags....Fotusky's clean fingering draws you in and projects the music, which would be somber in other hands, out." In the fall of 1999, Frank released his first CD "TEASIN' THE FRETS" to widespread critical acclaim.BLUES REVUE stated, "Thirteen heartfelt cuts...played and sung with care and emotion." Tom Olson from the Blues Connection said, "Frank understands and plays the music authentically," and BIG CITY BLUES offered, "This is a player that would be welcomed on any porch, front or back!" Tickets are $12.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door.
